This project focused on craft revival with artisanal potters in combination with a modern ceramic factory. Here the potters concentrate on producing items that are for export using existing making methods e.g. throwing on the wheel or beating. The factory’s skills are glazing, firing to a higher temperature (that the potters cannot achieve), packaging, and shipping the products to Europe.

The project focused on developing ceramic products with craft potters for a wider and more international market that would appreciate the handmade character of the work. The distinctive aspect of this project was to combine handmade ceramics with the glazing and firing technology of a modern factory.

The potters faced difficulties selling their ware locally due to the availability of equivalent, industrially made products in ceramics, plastics, etc.

The project works on the principles of fair trade where the potters get paid 30% more for their work. Their standard of living has improved; one of them has bought a sewing machine for extra work at night. Over the years this project has had a positive impact on revival of craft, the empowerment of women potters and on health and safety at the pottery.

Orders for clients such as Jamie Oliver at Home, David Mellor, Cinnamon Club, have made a positive difference to the lives of 9 potter families.

This project in ongoing.
